Time Is of the Essence

Time is our most valuable resource. It's that constant in our lives that keeps ticking, and once it's gone, it's never coming back. Many wise people throughout history have spoken about the importance of valuing our time. It’s wild to think that, even before media, they understood how precious it is.

Today, I listened to a Mel Robbins podcast that really opened my eyes to the "thieves" of our lives: our phones. We’ve all been there, scrolling through our phones throughout the day. Imagine if, instead of just consuming, we focused on creating. The internet is incredible—it helps us find inspiration, see different perspectives, and learn more. However, there’s a line between using it and overdoing it.

Phones and social media certainly have their perks—connecting us, helping us learn, and capturing moments. Yet, they also have a darker side. The doom scroll is real. It steals the best part of life: being present. Phones are taking the most valuable thing we have—our ability to truly live in the moment.

Whether you’re glued to your screen or looking around, that moment is going to pass. Only one of those options allows you to really experience it. Time is a one-way street—once it’s gone, it’s gone.

In this post, we will explore:

  • The negative effects of mindless scrolling on holistic health.

  • Alternatives to scrolling that can enhance the quality of your life.

  • Prioritizing your time effectively, aligning with your personal goals and values.

The Negative Effects of Mindless Scrolling on Holistic Health

Scrolling through social media and endless online content might seem harmless, but we both know it can take a toll on our mental health and our brains. Each time we swipe or tap, our brains release dopamine, the "feel-good" hormone, sparking a cycle of seeking instant gratification. While doom scrolling may feel fun in the moment, it leads to a decline in attention span and makes it harder to engage in deeper, more meaningful tasks.

Social media can also mess with our heads by making comparisons feel inevitable. With so many different lives, people, and places out there, if we're not confident in ourselves, it can bring up negative emotions. Remember, you are exactly where you need to be. If you desire something, take it as inspiration, not as something that steals your joy. The more grateful you are, the more the universe can show you blessings because you’re letting it know you appreciate what it gives you.

If you're with a loved one, relative, or friend, put your phone down unless it's part of the conversation. There's no shame in picking up your phone if you're busy—sometimes life calls for it. But when you catch yourself reaching for it mindlessly, take a pause. Ask yourself: Why did I grab my phone? What am I searching for? Is it more important than the person sitting next to me? Is this taking away precious time with loved ones? Instead of reaching for your phone, could you ask a meaningful question or share something interesting? Would you regret not being fully present if you couldn't see this person tomorrow?

Time is precious—don't let distractions take it from you.

Put Your Time to Better Use

The good news is that we have the time to make a change. Now that you are self aware, here is a list of things to do instead of the doom!

1. Listen to a Podcast

This is a great way to use social media as a tool—expand your mind and learn something new!

2. Hobbies Can Be Your Best Friend

Develop new skills, stimulate your creativity, and discover hidden talents you never knew you had.

3. Connect with Others

Loneliness doesn't have to be the answer. See friends, visit a cafe, people-watch, give a compliment, and build real connections. Social media can be a tool for connection when used intentionally!

4. Read Books

Reading is an amazing escape from everyday life. You can dive into new worlds, perspectives, and ideas. Thank social media and search for recommendation of books (another tool!). If you’re into it, consider joining a book club to take it a step further.

5. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Listen to your favorite meditation, YouTuber, or sit in silence—find what helps you stay positive and present. You can even grab a pen and paper to let your thoughts flow freely.

6. Move Your Body

Whether at home or in the gym, stretching or working out in the morning, midday, or night is great for your body and nervous system. You are a whole being—mind, body, and soul. Moving with intention helps strengthen that connection

Prioritize Your Time Wisely

Set Specific Goals

Identify what matters most to you. Write down your short-term and long-term goals, whether they relate to personal growth, health, relationships, or career. Align your daily activities with these goals.

Create a Daily Schedule

Planning your day can add structure and prevent mindless drifting into scrolling. Allocate specific times for work, hobbies, and relaxation. This simple step can help you make the most of your day.

Set Boundaries on Screen Time

Limit your device use by setting screen time boundaries. Most phones have built-in tools to track and restrict usage.

Reflect Regularly

Take time to evaluate your daily activities. At the end of each day or week, check how you spent your time concerning your goals. Reflection can help identify patterns of wasted time and motivate you to make positive changes.

In Essence, Your Life Is a Reflection of Where You Put Your Time.
